Zimbabwe Giraffe Thorn Tree (acacia erioloba)

Bright yellow, puff ball-like flowers bloom in an erect fashion from the feathery green leaf branch tips. The trunk is shiny reddish brown when young, matures grey to blackish brown and is deeply furrowed, bearing pairs of almost straight, whitish or brown spines. Spines often have swollen bases and appear at the bases of the leaves. The fully developed spines may be up to 2 or 3 inches long. The subsequent pods that form after flowering is over, are often used as a coffee substitute. Highly recognizable on the Kalahari Plains of Africa due to its noble size it is often referred to as as Giraffe Thorn or as Camel Thorn.
